Job Type
Full-time (minimum of 35 hours per week) consultancy contract for 12 months – subject to a probationary period of 3 months. Contract will be extended on an annual basis, dependent upon need and funding.
Salary Bracket
Compensation to be agreed and is dependent upon experience (range $35,000 - $42,000 per year). Expenses will be reimbursed in line with the EPIF’s Expenses Policy.
The Role and Requirements
About the role: This role will provide program management and technical support to the EPI and partner countries to meet their commitment to keep ivory beyond economic use, making use of the EPIF’s suite of tools. It will focus on improving the security, transparency, and management of government-held ivory stockpiles.
Location: This is a remote working role, located in Africa (preferably in an EPI member state) and within close proximity of an international airport. The EPIF does not pay for relocation costs.
Travel: The role will require regular international travel throughout Africa (at least two trips per quarter, with each trip lasting at least 7 days).
Reporting: Director of Programs. The post will work closely with the rest of the EPIF’s senior leadership team, including the Head of Finance, Head of Operations, and other Directors.
Key responsibilities
Support in the program management, provision of technical input, and undertaking of the following activities:
-Assess current facilities and procedures.
-Improve storeroom security and organisation.
-Develop and endorse standard operating procedures.
-Deliver training courses and assist in the development of training and publicity tools for new -procedures and the Stockpile Management System (SMS).
-Undertake inventories and audits of the stockpiles.
-Facilitate legal reviews and the development of policy documents for the long- term management of seized items.
Assist in the documentation of processes and report writing (for both internal and external stakeholders).
Develop and maintain relationships with government officials and other stakeholders.
Work with consultants, where necessary, to deliver the work and collaborate with sub-
grant awardees.
Ensure that the monitoring and evaluation information is available and US Government regulations are adhered to.
Represent and promote the EPIF and its work.
Whilst this role is primarily technical, it will involve general administrative work including drafting of budgets, work plans, official letters and terms of reference; taking minutes of meetings; proof-reading; collating and preparing documentation for meetings; collating information required for LEAHY vetting; formatting of documents; etc.
Deliverables
Quarterly work plans with deliverables will be jointly agreed with the Director of Programs, based on the active grants’ annual work plans. These deliverables will vary and may include technical activity reports (for example, storeroom assessments, training logs, and inventory results); minutes of meetings attended and next steps; grant reporting; activity planning documentation (terms of reference, budgets, work plans, and letters); as well as communication media (such as blog posts).
Person specification
Essential experience and skills.
You must possess/have a proven track record of:
University degree, or equivalent, in a relevant field.
At least 8 years’ cumulative experience in an international organisation or Government.
Demonstrable experience in project management and/or technical advisory roles.
Fluent in English or French and conversational in the second language.
Highly organised, with meticulous attention to detail, and a practical hands-on attitude to work.
Good interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with multicultural and multidisciplinary partners.
An enthusiastic and committed self-starter who is able to work well independently.
Strong ICT skills, and ease using basic Office software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint). The SMS is easy to understand given good IT skills, and any necessary training would be provided to the prospective candidate.
Desirable Experience and Skills:
Knowledge of CITES regulations.
Conducting security assessments.
Management of storerooms – stocks, audits, and inventories.
A good understanding of Africa and the conservation landscape on the continent.
